Portsmouth Philharmonic Orchestra

About the Concert
A Story in Music
The concert tells a story - not of one battle or one person, but of a shared experience. The music follows a path from the outbreak of war, through suffering and reflection, to resolution and remembrance.
This year we mark 80 years since VE & VJ Day - a milestone that deserves to be felt as much as remembered. The Portsmouth Philharmonic Orchestra, joined by soprano Jennifer Parker-Lummis, will guide you through one of the most significant chapters in human history, told entirely through music.

The Programme
An Evening in Two Acts
Into Battle, Through Loss
Mars - The Bringer of War
Gustav Holst - The Planets
The cold, mechanical rhythm of war opens the concert without words. There is no glory here - only tension, movement, and a sense of something irreversible.
Casta Diva
Bellini - Norma (Aria)
A single voice rises from this harsh landscape. A prayer is offered for peace. The music slows, softens, and reaches upward - a plea that war may not consume all.
The Battle of Britain Suite
Ron Goodwin
The orchestral sweep evokes the courage and intensity of 1940, with flying sequences, moments of suspense, and hard-won triumph.
Field of the Dead
Prokofiev - Alexander Nevsky
A soprano walks through the battlefield, calling out to the fallen. The sorrow is heavy but not hopeless - this is remembrance, not despair.
Intermission
A Pause in the Story
A time to reflect and breathe before the final chapter begins. Tea, coffee, and soft drinks available to purchase.
Memory, Resolve, and Home
Requiem for a Soldier
Made famous in Band of Brothers - both personal and universal. A single voice sings for all who were lost.
Band of Brothers Suite
Themes of unity, sacrifice, and loyalty. It holds both mourning and pride, capturing how friendships formed under fire often lasted a lifetime.
Symphony No. 3 - Eroica (Mvt. I & IV)
Beethoven
Bold, conflicted, triumphant - like the 20th century itself. Originally written for Napoleon, it captures the complexity of heroism.
I Vow to Thee, My Country
Holst - Jupiter Theme
More than patriotic. It is personal - a promise, a memory, a quiet kind of strength.
The National Anthem
We rise together.
Land of Hope and Glory
Elgar
Not about victory in the loud sense, but in resilience. A recognition that through loss and trial, something held firm.
